Layered reviews: the new EMFUSION treatment
As a beauty editor, I’ve had countless treatments—think an array of lasers, radio frequency, microneedling, and so much more. And while the devices might be different, what they all have in common is how they induce a controlled injury to force the skin to repair itself. The premise is sound, the results often impressive, and for two decades I’ve never questioned it.
But in the last few years my skin, despite all this intervention, has started to become more reactive, and treatments would often leave me resembling a tomato with a rash. Products I’d used for years started stinging or breaking me out, and it felt like I was having to learn how to deal with a whole new skin type.
I eventually realised that it wasn’t my hormones or skincare per se—a chronically compromised barrier was the culprit for all this chaos. Turns out even a beauty expert can get caught up in doing too much, too often, and my skin had had enough.
When I heard about EMFUSION, the new device that works not by injuring the skin but by actively restoring its first line of defence, the barrier, I wondered if it could be the answer to my prayers.
A treatment that bolsters the barrier rather than breaking it to boost collagen and elastin, or slough off layers of dead and pigmented skin, is still a somewhat radical idea when it comes to anti-ageing and general skin vitality. That said, it’s an idea that is gaining momentum, highlighting a shift we’re seeing in skincare and aesthetic treatments.
The shift towards barrier-first aesthetics
The skin barrier (the outermost layer of the skin) is your skin’s primary defence against everything from UV rays, pollution, bacteria and dehydration. When it’s in good shape, skin looks plump, calm and luminous, but when it’s not, products sting, redness flares, dehydration becomes a constant complaint, and the skin ages faster because it can no longer protect itself effectively.
For decades now, aesthetic treatments have largely ignored the barrier, focusing on the deeper layers where collagen is made, where our facial fat sits, and where our muscles are buried. The barrier itself only became the focus in-clinic when it needed to be repaired after a peel or laser, but it was never really the main focus, until now. Cue EMFUSION, the first and only device dedicated strictly to skin barrier restoration and longevity.
The treatment explained
EMFUSION uses patented DYNAMiQ technology to convert electrical energy into mechanical waves, in order to create temporary micro-channels in the skin (without the need for needles). These channels allow a targeted blend of actives to penetrate far more deeply than topical application alone could achieve. There’s hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, ectoin, allantoin and provitamin B5, which all work together to restore barrier function from within.
When I tried the treatment at the Natali Kelli Clinic, London, I loved how gentle, pain free and relaxing the experience was—frankly an unusual occurrence for me.
The treatment itself follows a four-step protocol: Refine gently exfoliates and removes impurities and damaged barrier remnants; Activate works to restore the calcium gradient in the epidermis, aka the balance that regulates cell turnover and barrier repair and which gets disrupted by everything from UV exposure to harsh skincare; Fuse enhances the penetration and absorption of the active ingredients used to repair your barrier, and finally, Seal locks in hydration and reinforces the barrier with protective ingredients.
The treatment takes under 30 minutes, and there’s no downtime or redness.
What to expect
I was able to test the treatment in my lunch break, and while I’d usually walk out of a treatment looking even more red than when I walked in, on this occasion I left with calm, glowing skin that sported a lot less redness than when I arrived.
When it comes to the studies, the device boasts an 80.3 per cent reduction in transepidermal water loss after treatment. What does that mean exactly? Well, it’s the measure of how much moisture is escaping through the skin, and therefore one of the most direct indicators of barrier stability. The stronger your barrier, the less moisture loss.
Not only that, but studies published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, also revealed that 96 per cent of subjects reported an improvement in the overall appearance of their skin, and 100 per cent expressed satisfaction with their results. And I can attest to that. In the days that followed, I was surprised at how much more resilient my skin had become, the redness was noticeably subdued, and it looked and felt more hydrated.
Who’s it for?
EMFUSION is suitable for all skin types and tones, which is ideal as barrier compromised skin is found across every single Fitzpatrick type. However, Black skin specifically already has fewer ceramides—fats that make up 50 per cent of the skin barrier—which means people like me are already prone to more moisture loss and a compromised barrier.
The treatment is also particularly relevant for anyone with sensitive or reactive skin that can’t tolerate more aggressive treatments, those with chronically dehydrated skin, people dealing with rosacea or eczema, and anyone who has overdone their skincare routine and needs a reset.
It also sits well within a broader treatment protocol—for example, as a pre-treatment to prepare the skin before lasers, peels or energy-based devices by getting the barrier into the best possible condition to heal well. Post-treatment, it can further support recovery and reduce downtime. And of course it’s an amazing standalone maintenance treatment, to keep skin performing optimally.
Barrier health first
This barrier-first approach isn’t about abandoning results-driven treatments, it’s about recognising that healthy, resilient skin responds better to everything else you do to it. A laser on a compromised barrier heals differently to a laser on a well-supported one, while retinoids on dehydrated skin behave differently to retinoids on skin that’s properly hydrated and protected.
EMFUSION doesn’t replace the other treatments, it helps you get the best out of them and aids in maintaining long-term skin health. I can’t think of anything better than slotting in a monthly session to improve my barrier function and ergo my skin.
